The “Truth”?

April 26, 2011

How do we know if we’re being told the truth by the media, our elected officials, and others in the public sphere?

Check out PolitiFact the Pulitzer Prize Winning website that researches claims to verify their accuracy.

But what do we do if the facts don’t support our beliefs?

“A man with a conviction is a hard man to change. Tell him you disagree and he turns away. Show him facts or figures and he questions your sources. Appeal to logic and he fails to see your point.” – Stanford University psychologist Leon Festinger

An interesting read on the subject can be found at Mother Jones in the article “The Science of Why We Don’t Believe Science”

Remember, as the poet Taylor Mali once said, “changing your mind is one of the best ways of finding out whether or not you still have one.”
